‘We have so many challenges’: Small?scale mining, Covid?19 and constant interruptions in West Africa

Currently, the impacts of Covid-19 are receiving significant global attention. This also applies to extractive industries, where this crisis is directing gaze policymakers, donors and academics alike. seen as having far-reaching disruptive consequences, especially in case artisanal small-scale mining. While authors consider attention important, their work on mining Ghana – West Africa more broadly reveals that for many miners, ‘just’ another interruption lives lifeworlds which chronically affected by interruptions different scales, magnitudes temporalities. As anthropologists have shown, foregrounding structural condition emblematic people, Global South key questioning, understanding contextualizing current moment ‘global’ must be an element any policy research emerging from it.
